    In 1954 Eisenstaedt held his first solo exhibition in New York and went on to win numerous awards, including the National Medal of the Arts award in 1989. Eisenstaedt was an extremely influential photographer and has been called the “father of photojournalism”. Alfred Eisenstaedt died on 24 August 1995, aged 97.
