    Batut was born in 1846 in Castres, and developed interest in history, archeology and photography. His book on kite aerial photography appeared in 1890 and contained an aerial photograph taken in 1889 from a kite over Labruguière, where he spent most his life until he died there in 1918.

    M. A. Batut took the first kite aerial photographs over Labruguiere, France in the late 1880s. His rig was ingenious. The camera (A) was held near the kite. An altimeter (B) encoded the exposure altitude on the film allowing scaling of the image.

    In 1887 he was the first to use kites for aerial photography. Lawrence Hargrave's " box kite" in their forecasts in the early 1900's. Another contributor to western kite development was William A. Eddy. Eddy turned to the train kites of hexagonal shape to provide what he needed.

    The first kite aerial photograph was taken in 1888 by Frenchmen Arthur Batut. He attached a camera to a kite and proceeded to fly it. This original picture has survived and can be viewed. It was a picture of the French countryside near Batut’s house. The original kite frame is currently on display in a museum in France.
