What is Binning in Astrophotography? (And When to Use it)

    https://astrobackyard.com/binning-astrophotography/
Astrophotography image acquisition software such as N.I.N.A, Astro Photography Tool (APT), or the ASIAIR Plus allow you to control the bin mode of your camera. If you find that your images are smaller (in both file size and resolution) than you expected, be sure to check if the camera defaulted to the bin 2×2 mode.

Binning In Astrophotography [To Bin or Not To Bin?]

    https://kevinrfrancis.com/2020/12/binning-in-astrophotography-to-bin-or-not-to-bin/
What is Binning In Astrophotography? Understanding signal to noise ratio or SNR is required in order to understand binning. In simplest terms, signal comes from the photons you want to collect and noise comes from everything else. To clarify, stacking will reduce noise, so binning is not a replacement for stacking. SNR Example

Binning - StarryWonders Astrophotography

It would simply be: SNR (binned 2x2, i.e., 4 pixels) = sqrt [K*tsub]*4* (Obj) / sqrt[4* [ (Sky+Obj)*tsub]+ R2] Compared to just one pixel, the signal is obviously 4 fold greater since we are now collecting light over an area of 4 pixels. But notice something important about the noise.

To bin or not to bin... - Sara Wager Astrophotography

Binning is the process of combining pixels together in the camera to make 'super pixels', which can control the sensitivity and resolution of the camera sensor. In my case, the QSI690, each pixel is 3.69 microns square. In the diagram below, 1xbin is the diagram on the left. This shows 1 pixel at a square 3.69 micron x 3.69 micron size.

What Is Binning? - Beginning Deep Sky Imaging - Cloudy Nights

    https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/586940-what-is-binning/
By "binning" four pixels in a 2x2 matrix, you effectively convert four small pixels into one large pixel. There is currently no added benefit such as further reducing read noise like there is with CCD cameras. There is also no download speed improvement, as your download speeds are already extremely fast thanks to the CMOS readout technology.

How do I bin an image in photoshop?: Astrophotography Talk …

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4096252
Binning is averaging groups of pixels together, for example, every 2x2 pixels, or 3x3 pixels. Binning improves signal-to-noise ratio by the square root of the number of pixels binned. So 2x2 bin improves S/N by 2. Of course, this sacrifices spatial detail. Photoshop, to my knowledge does not have a binning function.
