CCD vs. DSLR - A New Learning Curve - AstroBackyard

Update: When this article was written, I referred to any non-DSLR camera a “CCD” camera. The correct term for this type of camera is “ dedicated astronomy camera “, as the model mentioned in this post includes a CMOS sensor. Since then, I have had the pleasure of experience a true CCD camera, the Starlight Xpress Trius 694 (Mono). With that out of the way, enjoy the …

Apr 14, 2019. 1. Many astrophotographers use CCD (in many cases now actually a CMOS chip, bit still called 'CCD') dedicated astrocameras and others, like me, DSLR (including mirrorless like Sony A7, Nikon Z or Canon R class cameras), and some use both. Well 'CCD' can be cooled, resulting in less noise and have a full spectrum sensitivity while DSLR have low Halpha …

I think you mean CCD vs CMOS. There are CCD DSLR cameras that work just fine for astrophotography. CMOS, however, is not recommended. Your camera is unfortunately a CMOS type sensor. There are many differences between the two. CMOS sensors is more susceptible to noise than CCD sensors are.

Most people when searching for astrophotography equipment for beginners choose DSLR astrophotography because they either already have one or they are far cheaper to start with. When you go from DSLR astrophotography to a monochrome CCD you lose live view, but gain chip cooling. You lose color but gain sensitivity.

CCD vs DSLR imaging - Cloudy Nights

As far as OSC CCD's they have the advantage of set point cooling. That allows you to take dark's easier. The cooling also helps lower the sensor noise. They do have the color filter array or Bayer matrix. That cuts the amount of light reaching the sensor. So it's at a disadvantage against a mono CCD with filters. DSLR's are readily available and cheap.

But it is harder to get the very best images out of such. The top end of a dedicated astro camera is higher than that of a DSLR. Used poorly, however, you will get no better pictures out of a $15,000 dedicated astro camera than a well handled $700 DSLR.

CCD chips are much more sensitive, they have fewer pixel flaws, they have much less sound, and also the cams usually include thermoelectric cooling down to decrease sound even additionally. DSLRs are standardized, so economies of scale entered into play.

I also chose a DSLR because I can use it for things other than just AP and want to learn more about photography and editing in general. I got my whole kit including a Tycka Rangers 57" tripod, iOptron Skyguider Pro, Canon 750D, a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens and a Canon EF 75-300mm lens for around $1125USD (~£800).
