    The FITS file format is the most commonly used file format for astronomical data (astro photos!). It’s also not natively readable by the most common photo editing software suites, which seems like a problem to the beginner, and a bit annoying for advanced astrophotographers.

    So, for astro CCDS, we take the images in 16-bit FITS (akin to RAW) and we process in FITS if the software will allow it. Aside: FITs actually allows for IEEE and 32-bit modes, so it's advisable to use those as long as possible. The problem is that the processing software might require you to convert to 8-bits really early.
