Refractor vs Reflector Telescope For Astrophotography …

Very low maintenance is required. Frequent maintenance is required. Smaller size of the objective. Larger size of the objective. A bigger Refractor telescope is not feasible. A bigger Reflector telescope is definitely feasible. A refractor telescope is lighter. Reflector telescopes are a little bit heavier in weight.

Refractors generally have the edge over reflectors for a quality image, both from the standpoint of lens/mirror quality and precision optical mountings, and lack of central obscurations. Equally important in a choice of telescope type is the focal length and the resulting field of view.

The cheaper reflectors offer fast f ratios and do well when they are tickled up into perfect collimation and orthogonality. Refractors are much easier and more consistent. However, the larger the refractor is, the harder it is to get good colour correction at fast f ratios. They get slower as they get bigger. No such equation affects reflectors.

Refractor vs Reflector and astrophotography - Cloudy Nights

Both were specific imaging telescopes, one a reflector, one a refractor. But the "lack of maintenance" and "less variables" of the refractor won out. One point here is an imaging reflector has a different mirror setting than a visual reflector has. So, for example, an Astrograph can't be successfully use as a visual telescope.

Astrophotography, refractor vs reflector - Stargazers Lounge

Refractors need to be well colour corrected for imaging. The camera cannot, (unlike the eye) be told to ignore big blue haloes. So very cheap refractors are no good for imaging. The venerable ED80 remains a great starter refractor but will, like any refractor system without a rear lens, need a field flattener.

That is the Celestron 9-¼" SCT will give similar performance to a 150mm (5.9-inch, $11,400) refractor on low contrast planetary detail. Or to put it more bluntly, the $1,300, 9-¼" SCT optical tube will out-perform the $6,500, 130mm (5.1-inch) refractor, all else being equal. Of course all else is not equal.

Re: Refractor or Reflector – Which is “Best” for Astrophotography? In reply to RustierOne • Dec 7, 2013 Sorry had the math wrong…the "equivalent" refractor aperture is 221 mm or 8.7 inches ( for the provided example of the 9.25" reflector with 85mm secondary mirror)…

The Orion ED66 CF Carbon Fiber Refractor Telescope is an ideal refractor for anyone who is on the go. If you want to easily grab a telescope for astrophotography while you’re out and about, then this compact scope is ideal. This telescope is made from carbon fiber. This not only makes it light, but it also makes it resistant to temperature changes.

Refractor VS Reflector Telescopes: Which Should You Choose?

    https://americaneclipseusa.com/guides/refractor-vs-reflector-telescopes/
Both refractors and reflectors will have an inverted (upside-down) image. This is inconsequential when looking at astronomical objects as left/right, up/down does not matter. Since image orientation for astronomical use is a non-issue and both types present an image that is at least upside down, it’s a tie.
