Part 2 – Aligning the Secondary Mirror with Primary Mirror. Now that we have our secondary mirror lined up and square with the focuser, the next step is to align the secondary with the primary, now for this I will use my FarPoint Astro Laser collimator, which itself has recently been collimated by FarPoint Astro, now you can re-use use the 2″ extension tube and place the laser into the tube, but for the SharpStar I will use the M48 to 1.25″ lockable adapter like so:

Elliptical mirror offset. The "classic" method for the secondary mirror placement is to "offset" it away from the focuser and towards the primary in order to achieve a uniformely illuminated field of view. The offset in each direction = …

Does this secondary mirror need a recoating? - posted in Beginners Forum (No astrophotography): Hi there! Last week I bought a 2nd hand GSO 12 Dobsonian. Before using it, I wanted to clean it. So I also wanted to clean both mirrors. Well, unfortunately during cleaning the secondary mirror, I rubbed off the coating at some spots...

Telescopes for Astrophotography

    https://www.astropix.com/html/astrophotography/scopes.html
Instead of a spheroidal secondary, a small flat secondary mirror is used to send the focal plane out the side of the tube, as in a typical Newtonian. The small secondary leads to less light and contrast loss, and performance is nearly as good as with a refractor, but it is difficult to fully illuminate a wide field with this design, and it has little back focus.

How Focal Ratio Affects Your Astro Images - Sky & Telescope

    https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-blogs/imaging-foundations-richard-wright/how-focal-ratio-affects-your-astro-images/
A 200-mm (8-inch) telescope with a 2,000-mm focal length has a focal ratio of f/10. By contrast a 200-mm astrograph (a telescope designed for astrophotography) that has a focal length of 400 mm will have a focal ratio of f/2. Both telescopes collect the same amount of light, but the latter produces a much brighter image of your target.

Painting the secondary mirror of my Newtonian - NEUTRAL.org

Painting the secondary mirror of a Newtonian tlescope is a pretty scary idea. Certain parts of telescopes do not respond well to paint. Silvering of mirrors is quite high on this list. After selecting some slow drying black enamel spray paint I set about solving this this problem.

How to Check and Fix Telescope Collimation in the Field

    https://www.photographingspace.com/check-fix-telescope-collimation/
Mirrored optical telescopes like the Newtonian, SCT, RC, etc., will have a secondary mirror mounted on the business-end of the telescope tube (the front), held in place by either a “spider”, a glass pane, or some other method. On this, there will be adjustment screws, usually three of them, evenly spaced. Find those, carefully.
