Abstract. Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) may be precipitated by various retinal disorders and is characterised by rapid loss of visual field which cannot be explained by the ophthalmoscopic changes consequent upon the initiating disease. The electroretinogram is abnormal, indicating that the field loss is due to retinal dysfunction.

Background: AZOOR was first described by Gass in 1993 as a syndrome with rapid loss of one or more extensive zones of the outer retinal segments. It is characterized by photopsia, minimal funduscopic changes, and electroretinographic abnormalities. The efficacy of systemic steroids in treating AZOOR has been previously described and advocated by the concept of …

AZOOR: PROPER TESTING AND DIAGNOSIS - aaopt.org

CONCLUSIONS: AZOOR is a condition in which inflammation causes the eye to malfunction. Seeing flashing lights and having an enlarged blind spot are symptoms of AZOOR. The area of visual loss may increase for a period of time and then stabilize. In the majority of patients, the retina recovers its function and sight returns over one to three years.

AZOOR: NOT RARE, BUT OFTEN NOT DIAGNOSED

    https://www.aaopt.org/detail/knowledge-base-article/azoor-not-rare-often-not-diagnosed
CONCLUSIONS: There tends to be several reasons for the delay in diagnosis AZOOR, but the most misleading one is that AZOOR fails to be flagged via fundoscopic examinations nor neurological imaging. Knowledge of the disease and an ERG, though not routinely performed, is imperative in diagnosing AZOOR and as well other retinal occult disorders.

The AZOOR Society

    https://www.azoorsociety.org/
AZOOR (Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy) is a rare eye disorder affecting the retina that causes loss of vision in one or both eyes which may recover over a number of years. The disorder primarily affects young, short-sighted women. Because of its rarity, little is known about the disorder and there is no known treatment or cure.
