A 105 mm lens will require 52 mm of extension to go from 1:2 to 1:1. 1:2 is good enough for coins although a boost closer to 1:1 is useful for small coins. You can also use add-on lenses (also called diopters) to get your magnification a little higher. These typically come in +2d (Canon 500D), +3d (Nikon 6T), +4d (Canon 250D), +8d (Raynox DCR-250).

lkeigwin Well-Known Member. I have a 50mm, 100mm, and 180mm. I use the 180mm almost exclusively. I can bring the lights up quite high and nearly vertical to the coin which is what you want 95% of the time. The shorter lenses I use for slab shots, or when shooting a group of coins. A 100 or 105mm macro lens will generally be adequate for photographing most coins. Just make sure that it focuses down to 1:1 (life size on the film/detector).

A very capable camera. I used one of these for coins from 2007 to 2014, when I bought a D610. I used the manual focus 105mm f4 AIS Micro-Nikkor (ca. 1979) for most pictures. You should be able to get this lens for no more than $200. One thing you should do when taking photos is turn on the "exposure delay" mode.

Tripod – We will have both the camera and lighting set up on tripods. A Novoflex with a ball head for the camera, and Manfrotto Pixi Evo-2 to hold the lighting studio.
