Better Beamer. I consider the Better Beamer developed by Walt Anderson to be the best flash extender on the market. It allows you to shoot at greater distances and smaller apertures than the flashgun alone would. It simply focuses the light from the flashgun into a narrower beam so that it reaches further, increasing the flash output by about 2 ...

At less than $40 it also is inexpensive enough to experiment with freely. The two photographs above show the Better Beamer being used together with a Canon EOS D30, 100~400mm f/5.6L lens and 550EX flash. The diagram below illustrates the three components‚ the fresnel lens, side supports and Velcro attachment band. Illustration‚© Birds As Art.

All that the Better Beamer is is a thick hose…. First I offer them the basics of using flash: I often use flash (and thus the Better Beamer) on cloudy days and in overcast conditions to help eliminate the usually blue color cast, to render the bird’s feathers a bit sharper, and to add a catchlight to the subject’s eye or eyes.

Secrets of Digital Bird Photography

The most popular flash extender for bird photography is, by far, the celebrated Better Beamer (pictured above) by Walt Anderson. I recently had the pleasure of shooting with Walt at Crane Creek (now called Magee Marsh) in Ohio—a famous hotspot for warblers and warbler photographers in spring. Of the photographers using flash at Magee Marsh ...

Although the Walt Anderson Better Beamer is a very affordable and effective flash extender (and extremely popular among birders), for really serious bird photography at large focal lengths I recommend building your own “ mega-beamer ” like the one shown in the figure above. This unit provides significantly more illumination at longer ...

This distance between your bird stage and your background is also important. The greater the distance between stage and background, the greater the background blur will be. In this way, you can “cheat” slightly, by giving an f/6.3 lens the look of an f/4 telephoto or faster.

I can confirm that the better beamer I purchased originally for a Canon 580EX, which also fit the 580EXII just dandy, fits the Godox Ving/Falshpoint R2 lithium Ion just fine. I have another "beamer" called "Harbor digital" which is a solid one piece fit, vs. the two halfs of the better beamer, and it was made specifically for the 580exII.
