    Watkins extensively photographed early San Francisco, Yosemite, Mendocino and the Sierra Nevada mining regions. His photogaphs of Yosemite helped influence Congress and President Lincoln in the preservation of Yosemite Valley. Watkins also made some of the earliest photographs of Southern California and the Pacific Nortwest.

Carleton was born in 1829 in Oneonta, New York, the oldest of eight children born to his parents, John and Julia Watkins. Carleton’s dad was a carpenter, and his mom was an innkeeper. Carleton grew up as an avid hunter and fisherman.

    Watkins is best known for his mammoth print photographs of Yosemite, however the greatest number of surviving prints are in the stereograph format. Watins also produced photographs in several other sizes. Mammoth Plate Typically 18 by 22 inches. Before the development of photographic enlargers images were contact printed from the glass plate negative.
