The correct term for this type of camera is “ dedicated astronomy camera “, as the model mentioned in this post includes a CMOS sensor. Since then, I have had the pleasure of experience a true CCD camera, the Starlight Xpress Trius 694 (Mono). With that out of the way, enjoy the raw emotions I share during my first experiences using a dedicated astronomy …

I have done astroimaging with two Nikon DSLRs, three CCD cameras (two color, one mono) and four CMOS cameras (one mono, three OSC). My recommendation is that you skip the DSLRs and CCD cameras altogether and go directly to a cooled OSC astronomy camera with a large CMOS sensor as recommended above. The workflow is MUCH easier.

DSLR: You can do decent astrophotography with an off-the-shelf DSLR. All you need is the proper adapter to connect the camera to the telescope (T-adapter). These adapters are relatively cheap and all major cameras have them. The advantage of this path is that you might already have a DSLR, in which case you don't need to spend more money.

I think you mean CCD vs CMOS. There are CCD DSLR cameras that work just fine for astrophotography. CMOS, however, is not recommended. Your camera is unfortunately a CMOS type sensor. There are many differences between the two. CMOS sensors is more susceptible to noise than CCD sensors are.

Apr 14, 2019. 1. Many astrophotographers use CCD (in many cases now actually a CMOS chip, bit still called 'CCD') dedicated astrocameras and others, like me, DSLR (including mirrorless like Sony A7, Nikon Z or Canon R class cameras), and some use both. Well 'CCD' can be cooled, resulting in less noise and have a full spectrum sensitivity while DSLR have low …

Well 'CCD' can be cooled, resulting in less noise and have a full spectrum sensitivity while DSLR have low Halpha sensitivity. On the other hand, DSLR sensors have much improved the latest years in sensor technology and image processing hardware (DIGIC 8, or EXPEED 6) and even modding a DSLR is not needed anymore, because better sensors can compensate for the …

The telescope should be able to place the target somewhere on the CCD sensor and you can frame the object better, if necessary, by using the slow motion controls on the mount. Once done, a series of short exposures is taken. If you are using the LRGB filters mentioned above you can work with just 180-second exposures.

A clip-in DSLR filter can be used with a camera lens for astrophotography. Speaking of light pollution, astrophotographers in the city can benefit from LP (Light pollution) filters for their DSLR camera. The filter I currently use for all RGB (color) imaging is an IDAS LPS (light pollution suppression) filter made by Hutech. This clip-in filter does a great job at blocking stray light …

Need help selecting a dslr or ccd for astrophtography

Definitely, if you want the very best possible astro shots, then you do need to go the CCD with color filter route, but if you want "good enough", then a DSLR may suit you. You are right : "may suit you" is exactly how I felt with my DSLR setup.
