Understanding Gamma Correction - Cambridge in Colour

UNDERSTANDING GAMMA CORRECTION. Gamma is an important but seldom understood characteristic of virtually all digital imaging systems. It defines the relationship between a pixel's numerical value and its actual luminance. Without gamma, shades captured by digital cameras wouldn't appear as they did to our eyes (on a standard monitor).

What is gamma correction? Achieving photoreal textures …

Your photos are probably gamma-corrected already. In the digital world, gamma correction happens all the time. Televisions and monitors perform gamma correction on images so viewers will find the imagery more realistic. If your camera has an LCD screen for immediate viewing of the photo, the image is gamma-corrected on its way to the display.

Understanding Gamma in Photography | japanistry.com

    https://www.japanistry.com/understanding-gamma-in-photography/
Gamma—or more precisely, gamma-correction—simply refers to the operation to encode the linear values the camera records into a non-linear relationship (or the reversal of this process in decoding). The reason we must gamma correct images lies in the historical need to deal with the exponential output response of the old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) displays.

Image Processing Algorithms Part 6: Gamma Correction

Without correction, the image on the display would appear darker than intended (gamma values greater than 1 will give darker images while gamma values less than 1 will give lighter images). Gamma correction (which is sometimes, and confusingly, abbreviated to just ‘gamma’) is the process of inverting the original gamma curve to provide an image that is …

Enhancement of a digital image with gamma correction

To many people the colors on Macintoshes have always looked washed out. Partly for this reason, and partly because Windows computers assume a system gamma of 1.0, and they currently dominate the world, Apple decided with Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6) to change their assumed system gamma to 1.0, hence their OS correction from 1.8 to 2.2. Since this change …

Gamma correction was meant to compensate for output signal loss though, so what I believe modern screens do is they simply simulate the behaviour of CRTs to cancel gamma correction out and display the scene just like it was captured by the camera - roughly speaking, mapping camera shades 1:1 to the screen ones.
