Why mirror lockup on long exposures? - Photography …

The wiki mentions that the vibration will be most affected with exposure time between 1/2 to 1/60 because the vibration will dominate the exposure. Like the OP, I still don't understand the mirror lock for long exposure because that one second of vibration will produce almost nothing for the camera to capture.

How to Increase Sharpness in Long Exposure Photography

    http://photographyblogger.net/how-to-increase-sharpness-in-long-exposure-photography/
When you take a photo, the mirror inside your camera flips up, which produces some vibration. Under normal circumstances this will not affect your sharpness, but long exposures have a different set of parameters to work with – especially when it comes to eliminating camera shake.

What is Mirror Slap? How to Avoid Internal Camera Shake …

Its effect is amplified when you’re taking long exposure photos, as the vibrations created when the mirror moves can cause blur in the final image. In fact, this video on YouTube shows you how the mirror and shutter work in slow motion: As you can see in the video, the mirror is a relatively hefty piece of equipment in the camera.

When the mirror flips up it creates a very small amount of vibration. And in some cases this vibration can be enough to cause a small amount of blurring in the image. You are most likely to see this at shutter speeds between around 1/100s to 1/4s. At faster shutter speeds, the shutter opens and closes too quickly for the vibration to have much effect.

Your mirror is a liar. My mirror is a liar. We have spent our entire lives looking at an inverted image of ourselves. A mirrored image. And that flipped image is what can make photos of ourselves seem unsettling and unfamiliar. The Mere-Exposure Effect and what it means when you're looking at your headshots.

Dampening vibration with long lenses. | Photo.net …

To dampen vibration you need a lot of coupled mass. This could be in the form of a small sandbag draped over the lens housing or just your hand or arm placed on top of it. (Hanging a weight from the tripod's centerpost does very little except to make it a slightly less likely to blow over in a strong wind.)

Exposure Delay Mode / Mirror Lock up - Digital Photography Review

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2852247
For exposures loger than 2.5-3", generally it'll make little difference because the mirror vibration will be gone for most of the exposure. For exposures between 1/(2*)FL and 2.5 seconds it will usually make a difference and for exposures over 1/FL the difference will usually be quite large, increasing with the FL of the lens. Paul

Remote trigger/shutter release cable: In long exposures, even a small vibration of the camera will contribute to delivering a not-very-sharp image. To help avoid that, a remote trigger or shutter cable release is the perfect tool, so you don’t have to …
