Depth of field is the distance between the closest and farthest points in the photo that appear sharp. Factors that control depth of field are the focal length of the lens, the working aperture, the distance of the background from the subject, the distance of the foreground from the subject, size of the subject and how much the subject is magnified.

Macro and close up photography creates the perfect storm for shallow depth of field. Getting close up to very small objects gives you a very shallow DoF. It’s also far more noticeable and a dead giveaway of the limitations of photography. We’re using a very deep subject to demonstrate DoF in this article.

There are two factors that determine the DOF in an image. 1) The relative size of the object circle of confusion vs. the size of entrance pupil. 2) How far apart the entrance pupil and the object circle of confusion (focus plane) are from each other. These two factors will determine the DOF for near and far subjects.

A common comment about macro photography is that you’re more likely to work at an aperture of f8 than f2.8. In other words, when working at very close distances, the depth of field can get really small and it is sometimes required to close the aperture to increase the DOF. Not all rules must be followed however, especially in photography.

Depth of field (DoF) in photography can be defined as the space in the image that is relatively sharp and in focus. It is the distance between the nearest and farthest elements that are sharp and in focus in your photos. To understand the meaning of depth of field better, it is the amount of the image that is acceptably in focus.
