    F-stops (also referred to as f-numbers) refer to how open or closed the opening in your lens is. The wider the aperture – the opening in the lens – the smaller the f-number.     Otherwise known as aperture size, the f-stop regulates the amount of light that can pass through a lens at a given shutter speed. Assuming nothing else changes, a small aperture (say f/16) will let in less light than a larger one (say f/4) , so it would take longer for the same quantity of light to pass through to the sensor.
