What’s confusing is that this kind of stop is different from the stop in “f-stop.” F-stops only refer to the size of the aperture. Unlike stops of exposure, they don’t simply double or halve, but instead, depend on the f ratio. For example, going from f/2.8 to f/2 is one stop up. (Remember, a smaller f-number means a larger aperture!)

The f-stop aperture scale. An f-stop is expressed as a fraction, with “f” as the numerator and the f-stop number as the denominator. The aperture size reads inversely to its corresponding f-number: The smaller the f-number, the larger the aperture. The larger the f-number, the smaller the aperture. So how do you know which aperture setting to use?

What Do F-Stop Numbers Mean? The f-stop numbers can be read in a scale of decreasing apertures. Not all these numbers match across all types of photography equipment. Sometimes, they depend on which camera you have. That being said, all the f-stop numbers will represent a setting for the aperture relative to your lens’s maximum aperture.

Because the F-stop scale is what helps you to measure and understand the aperture size. On your camera, you’ll see ‘f/’ or ‘f’ followed by a number which denotes how wide the aperture is. The lower the number, the wider the aperture. You can adjust these settings in aperture priority and manual modes in your camera.

F-stops are actually ratios. They are derived from your lens’ focal length divided by the diameter of your aperture. They represent a fraction of your aperture opening. For instance, an f-stop of f/4 means 1/4th or 25 percent of the lens is open. On a 100mm lens, f/4 would measure 25mm or about an inch.

Many lenses have an aperture range where each f-stop is one full stop of light different than the previous or the following f-stop. Here is an example of an f-stop scale with full-stop increments: f/1.0, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f22, f/32, f/45, f/64

The term “F stop” can be really confusing if you are a beginner in photography. A smaller f-number corresponds to a larger aperture opening and a larger f-number corresponds to a smaller opening. You can see in the f stop chart that the opening is really big for an aperture value of f2.8 when compared to f11.
