    Born into a cosmopolitan family of bankers in San Fransisco on October 15, 1879, Francis Bruguiere embraced photography in the spirit of amateur idealism shared by most West Coast pictorial photographers, desiring to marry painting with photography. Trained as fine artist, he viewed photography as a medium for investigating form, space, and mood.

    (1879 - 1945) American Biography Born in San Francisco, Francis Bruguière was a painter, musician, and photographer. A 1905 visit to New York and a subsequent metting with Alfred Steiglitz spawned his initial interest in photography. By 1912 he had begun to develop an interest in abstraction and a system of multiple exposure.

    Born the youngest of four sons into a wealthy San Francisco family, Francis Bruguière was interested in painting, poetry, and music, and became an accomplished pianist. Upon his return from Europe, where he studied painting, he met Alfred Stieglitz at the 291 Gallery in New York and soon took up photography.

    Returning to San Francisco in 1906, Bruguière devoted himself professionally to photography, opening a portrait studio. In 1919 he moved to New York and established a studio. He began photographing for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar. His interest in the theater led Bruguière to the Theater Guild, where he became the official photographer.
