    Use a fast focusing lens - I used my 50 1.2. Shoot at a fairly wide open aperture. I shot most pictures at f 2.2-2.8 so I let more light in. Use a fast shutter speed - gymnasts move fast. I varied speed, but primarily was at 1/500. Use a flash to help stop action and light the subject.

    Try posting on the Sports forum and it may also be worth looking at other gymnastics shots on, say, flickr to see if others are able to get uncluttered or out of focus backgrounds. Also have a look at shots by professionals, although maybe they take them in training rather than competition.

    My overriding advice for shooting gymnastics... 1) Use the highest ISO you can on your camera (stopping action is critical for sharpness...even more important than digital noise)

    You may or may not get anything usable depending on the gym lighting. Also use a monopod or tripod. I use a nikon d700 which is good up to iso 6400 with a fast lens and I use a monopod or tripod depending on the location. You may be best at using a video camera to capture your gymnast and buy one or two of the pro shot pics.
