    On 5 November 1927 the British Museum appointed Donald Stanley Lyon as its first official photographer. Born in Walthamstow in 1891, Lyon’s first job was as a butcher’s shop assistant. Quite how he became a photographer is unknown, but it is understood that he began working at Fleming & Co in 1919 until he was ‘poached’ by the Museum in 1927.
