Photographing Bats in Flight (in the UK) - Nature TTL

In theory, the simplest way to photograph bats in flight is to illuminate them solely using flash, whilst the shutter is held open on a long exposure. To achieve this, I operated the camera in continuous shooting mode, with shutter speeds of between 20 and 60 seconds (depending on how many bats I was expecting). With long expos…

Focusing is going to be a matter of guesswork—if you need something to focus on, look for a tree branch that you think is about the same distance off the ground as the bats will be, lock your focus there, then reposition your camera and tripod on that spot where you think you're going to see a lot of bats (you could also bring along a long pole and hold that up to the same relative …

The simplest way of capturing images of bats in flight is to shoot in full darkness and allow flashes to completely illuminate the subject. A beam-type trigger - in my case the Sabre - is then used to fire the flashes whilst the shutter is held open.

A laser points through each hole, and where the two lasers meet is the sweet spot: the bats have to barrel through it to trigger the camera. When a flying bat breaks the laser beam, six flashes burst aflame as the camera, mounted on a tripod a few feet away, snaps the picture.

Wildlife shooting can be challenging in the best of circumstances. Initially, I located and captured images of some Mexican Free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis), while they roosted. This was exciting and I enjoyed the experience with the little creatures of the night. So I decided to “up the challenge” a bit, by selecting a moving subject, in the dark, flying at various speeds and ...

There are a lot of bats around my house in the evenings at the moment. I have no idea how to photograph them in flight. When they are out it is too dark to focus. Also they fly quite fast and never in a straight line. I have a Canon Speedlite 580EX II (just bought today).

Your best bet, if it's possible, is to be outside, on a night with a lot of natural light (moonlight, with a full or near-full moon), point the camera at a spot where the bats pass by, and try taking pictures without flash, but a high ISO.

You can do this with a DSLR and remote flash (sold separately). I think the method is to use a normal camera exposure of 60th of a second with a small aperture. This would provide a very underexposed image with ambient light. The electronic flash (1000ths of a second) is synchronized such that it occurs when the shutter is all the way open.

For all in flight captures, if the subject is moving towards or away from the camera, set your camera to AF-C or Al-Servo mode. This will follow your subject, although I believe it to be less accurate than manual focus. However, it is a great starting point for the first-time shooter.
