    a small map - is OK; a large map done as one shot - too fuzzy; another large map done as lots of shots and stitched together - quite good, but a lot of work and the results are variable. Furthermore, besides myself doing this, I want to encourage other 'one-placers' throughout the world to use the mapping application, and get their own local maps.

    Place each at 45 degrees from the center of the map so you won't get light bouncing off the map and directly hitting the map. This will cause hot spots. Pull the light back until the lights evenly light up the map. Shoot and check image to see if you need two more lights. If so, place two on each side.

    Keep the lighting consistent, mount the camera from above if possible and slide the map, rug or whatever, through the legs of the tripod making sure there is some overlap on each image you take. Lightroom or PS will do the stitching reasonably quickly but you will of course end up with fairly large files. Good luck

    I think if you want to use a camera, you would need to use a stand to ensure that the sensor is parallel to the map. I previously did this and mounted the camera using a monopod leg, clamped to the top of a bookcase. This enabled me to photograph 1m x 1m quite easily, and I didn't need to stitch anything together.

    I haven't figured out how to get maps out of Google Maps other than to just use the print function. However, Google Earth usually has the same photos and I can export those images. So I zoom in to get a decent resolution and then grab a bunch of pictures and use PhotoShop to stitch them together.
