    A German immigrant, Hillers found employment as a boatman on John Wesley Powerll’s 1871 survey of the Colorado River. By first assisting and then substituting for the expedition’s official photographer, Hillers progressed quickly, showing a natural aptitude for the medium. The next year he was made chief photographer for the survey.

    John Karl Hillers (1843, Hanover, Germany – 1925) was an American government photographer. Hillers came to the United States in 1852. He was a policeman and then a soldier in the American Civil War, first with the New York Naval Brigade, then in the army, he re-enlisted after the war and served with the Western garrisons until 1870.
