    With regards to equipment, photographing kingfishers on a perch isn’t too demanding. I’d recommend a lens of at least 300mm, but you don’t need a high end camera (I certainly don’t have one). Now for action shots (diving, BIF etc.) you most definitely do need a high end camera and a very capable lens, but for starting out that isn’t an issue.
