Medium format negatives go up to 4″ x 5″ and everything 4″ x 5″ or above is a large format negative. Your 4″ x 5″ large format negatives are the most common size, made popular by the camera models of the 1930s-1950s. The idea here is that the larger the area, the more detail you can capture and the better the photograph.

Even though film has grain, if you do a high DPI drum scan like 4000 to 8000 dpi you can enlarge film a lot more. Check out the SD9 vs 35mm film crops at the link above. Notice that at 20x30 and 300 dpi the film is still looking pretty smooth and digital starts getting kindof a water color look.

scanning large format

I post this here as I shoot primarily large format and do scans on an epson 3200. My question is when I have scans done on drum scanners for 8X10 or 4X5 they are usually done at 300 meg. When I do them on the epson I have a choice of 6400 or 3200 or 1600. The file size is enormous at 6400 and over 500 meg at 3200 on 4X5 and more manageable at 1600.

(All of those dimensions are the inch measurements of the film for the camera; by comparison, a full-frame sensor is about 1×1.5 inches.)
