What is light Spill? - Digital Photography Review

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/11037253
Re: What is light Spill? Light spilling is where light falls where it was not intended to fall. Worst looking example is when BG light spills on subject - creates a hazy, blown out look at times. Main light that spills on BG isn't too bad and sometimes it's intentional (I use 1 light and want it to spill on the BG to light both my subject and BG).

Controlling the spill of light onto the backdrop is an essential part of creating a low-key portrait. Light spill is greatly reduced through the use of a beauty dish, like the Glow EZ Lock 34” Beauty Dish Silver. Place a gridded beauty dish at a 45-degree angle to the subject and slightly above the eye-line.

Hi there r/photography. I've been having a rather annoying issue lately with light spill. Obviously, when you're using a strobe indoors, light is going to fly everywhere--especially when there are white walls installed. In my instance, I'm using a 60" octabox with both diffuser panels installed. I don't have a grid.

Lighting Technique: Flagging and Feathering - DIY …

Feathering the light means that it is not the center of the softbox that is aimed at the model, but rather the edge of it. For this shot I went with feathering. Side View. I placed my light 90 degrees from the model. I placed my model just right at the side of my light so that the spill of my light would hit her.

An umbrella is often one of the first modifiers new photographers try — and for good reason. They are easy to use, easy to transport, and affordable. Photography umbrellas create softer light by increasing the light’s surface area. There are two main types of photography umbrellas — diffusion umbrellas and reflective umbrellas.

Controlling light-spill and the quality of light. Although a shoot-through umbrella produces diffuse light, it’s also uncontrolled light. You will find that light-spill tends to throw light onto walls and ceilings, which will reflect onto your subject. If the surfaces have color tints the reflected light may affect the color of your scene.
