For indoor newborn photos, I keep it simple using a single speedlite to bounce flash as well as the built in reflector to throw some light forward. I prefer my Canon 600EX-RT, but you could also use a Canon 430 as an alternative.

For indoor newborn photos, I keep it simple using a single speedlite to bounce flash as well as the built in reflector to throw some light forward. I prefer my Canon 600EX-RT, but you could also use a Canon 430 as an alternative. Newer versions of both flashes have built in reflectors, but bounce flash on older models will usually work fine without any modifiers.

When is the best time to photograph my baby? I believe a newborn baby can be photographed at any age. You don't need to keep the newborn in low light. Just normal daytime room light near a window is enough light to get pleasing pictures with most digital cameras. A baby may have an unknown condition like epilepsy or can exhibit intolerance to camera flashes like seizures. The camera doesn't cause the baby to have seizures but babies conditions can sometimes go unnoticed until an incident which reveals it. If a baby has never been exposed to flash photography I don't want to be the first.
