Night football settings? - Digital Photography Review

When sun is still up, shoot at iso 800 with shutter speed of like 1/1000 to get some really crisp photos. Even with decent lighting, I'll shoot at like iso 2000, f2.8 at 1/320 with flash on high speed sync. Some of the fields around here have really good lights and you can get by with iso 1200, but those are rare.

At 1600, you can simulate a push in digital editing and have a nicer looking image than if you shot at 3200. Also, I would suggest switching out of evaluative metering mode and trying the center-weighted mode instead.

I am going to shoot my first night football game tonight and was wondering if someone would have some suggestions on settings for a 20D with a 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. Use a wide aperture to capture enough light and blur the background. Image by Huskies Football. However, if you're using a cheaper lens with a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or smaller, you'll need to open your lens up as wide as it will go to let in as much light as possible. This is particularly true when shooting indoors, as the lighting can be poor.

To counter this, set your camera’s settings to the following: AF-C Priority Selection to RELEASE, AF-Area Mode to DYNAMIC AREA AF (9 points) and Focus Tracking with lock-on to 3 (normal). When photographing sports where subjects are often obscured by other athletes for example at a track event select a long lock-on to maintain focus on your subject.

The settings for shooting will vary depending on the light present but it is best to shoot wide open to allow the most light in on the sensor. This also helps separate the player from distracting background elements. This would mean shooting at f2.8 on many lenses such as a 70-200.
