Nightclub Photography - Subtle Sensor

I always shoot in manual so I’m pretty quick at altering the flash settings if need be but, for most club photography, I stick at 1/8th – 1/4 power. I might occasionally bump it up if a club is unusually dark or has a very high ceiling but, remember, I’m using a Demb Flip-it attachment that means I have more control over how much of the flash get’s bounced directly toward the subject.

What should my plan be for photographing in a nightclub …

To start shooting, set your camera to Manual mode, What you want to do is to get up close with your subject, but keep the in the night club context. You don't need high ISO to do this, 400 will be more than enough. Drag the shutter a bit, 1/30 or 1/15 and keep your aperture around f/5.6-f/8, that should be more than enough with a crop sensor.

All of these would vary but I would recommend starting at having the flash set to ETTL, ISO800 @ f/4 and a shutter speed of 1/40 to start with. REMEMBER - These settings are purely guidelines and will vary from club to club, shooting style, position of the flash etc. You need to have a benchmark and adjust from there.
