On March 5 of 2013, Nikon released the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR, the long awaited update to the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D VR that was released over 13 years ago as Nikons first lens to sport image stabilization (Vibration Reduction) technology. I have been impatiently waiting for this lens update for quite some time now for a nu…

The lens can be used for landscape, wildlife and even macro photography (with a close-up filter or extension tube). I prefer the close-up filter, as no light is lost and the viewfinder stays bright. ... 9 thoughts on “ Nikon 80 …

It’s clear the new 80-400 AF-S VR lens easily beats the 70-200 VR1 lens and TC20III combination. Now for a real world test, since I mainly photograph birds, I went to the Singapore Botanic Gardens this morning to …

80-400 good enough for birding on DX? - Digital …

In the 80-400's favor is substantially faster autofocus and a nice quick zoom rate. VR is good, but not as good at the 200-500. Portability is much much better with the 80-400 (than a 70-200 and 200-500 combo). Birding is mostly about reach, and you'll never have enough.

The Nikon 400mm f/2.8G fully works with all current Nikon teleconverters and its low-light capabilities are very impressive. The Nikon 1.4x TC-14E II teleconverter increases the focal length of the lens to 560mm while increasing the maximum aperture to f/4.0, the Nikon 1.7x TC-14E II teleconverter increases the focal length to 680mm and maximum ...

I've used both, but I own only the 80-400.The images with the 80-400 are a little bit soft on the long end, stopping down helps. Overall, the lens is slow in AF-performance and don't overestimate the effectiveness of the VR. But on a tripod, with appropriate technique you can get very sharp images.
