Re: D800E night sky shots In reply to PHXAZCRAIG • Mar 23, 2013 1 I RAW converted the images with View NX 2 and Capture NX2 and save the various settings and apply the same settings to each image in the sequence. Then I save as a tiff. I then resize in Photoshop as the files are usually too large to handle easily.

This is a single exposure taken with a Nikon D800e for approximately 15 seconds with a 14-24 zoom lens at iso 200. In this shot was was trying to capture the full effect of the rising moon but not allow the moonlight to totally blow out the surround stars. In the right hand portion of the night sky you can make out Orion.

Night photography with D800 - focusing?: Nikon FX SLR …

I shoot at ISO 100 most of the time, 400 occasionally and never above 400, even on a d800e you get too much noise for high quality night shots. That is just for focusing at night, I switch to stills later. Noise is ok at 1600-3200 with good processing you can pull very high quality output. -- hide signature -- Cheers, Marin

But if you're using a tripod—which is a great idea for night shots, as it will stabilize the camera during long exposures—be sure VR is turned off. Shutter speeds that are likely to yield the best results: 1/15, 1/8, 1/4 second or longer—and you'll need VR or a tripod for those. For more advanced night shots, a tripod is necessary.

Nikon D810A vs. D800 – Night Photography | Adam DeSerio

    http://adamdeserio.com/nikon-d810a-vs-d800-night-photography/
During the night the D800 was superior, but during the day the D810A definitely has the edge (pun intended). This is most likely due to the fact that the D810/D810A have the anti-aliasing filter removed, which claims an improved resolving power of about 2.5 – 4 megapixels over the D800. Will you see the difference in a Facebook photo?

The Best Night Photography Lenses for Nikon Cameras

There is no perfect nighttime photography lens, and the 14-24mm is a case in point. For example, f/2.8 is not the ideal aperture for nighttime photography. Something like f/2.0 allows in twice as much light, letting you use an ISO that is significantly lower.

The D800 / D800E have a lot of menu options, but there are some things that you can only control with external controls. Autofocus Modes, Bracketing and Flash On the front left of the camera, you will find a lever that goes from AF to M, with a button in the middle (big red circle in the image below).

Nikon Night Photography Shootout - Exploring Exposure

Overall the D800 has the worst implementation for night photography, yet the best for daytime use. This could easily be fixed with a firmware update by simply having these activated (displayed in red) when the Fn button is pushed. Of course the other option is to use Live View which you can set to display the VH by pressing the info button.
