2 A fast prime, like the 50mm f/1.4 lets in about 8x to 16x the amount of light that your current lens does (f/3.5-5.6). It is not very expensive and what most people use for low light situations. The f/1.8 version does almost the same, and is extremely cheap.

The camera will meter off the subject in focus at the focus point. If tis dark the highlights will be overexposed. The only real answer to this is to take one picture and then take another after adjusting the under/over exposure using exposure compensation. The dynamic range of the D90 is not as good as later cameras.

    1. Choose a Low Lighting Lens. One of my first concert photos snapped with an old Nikon D90 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Guide To Low Light Photography (15 ESSENTIAL Tips)

When shooting in low light, photographers tend to have a preference over which settings to change first. For most, the first thing to change is the aperture.
