Under vs. Over-Exposure, which is better?

    https://dailywildlifephoto.nathab.com/photography-guide/under-vs-over-exposure-which-is-better/
Over-Exposure, which is better? Exposure is really just a semi-fancy way of saying the amount of light that is in your photo . When shooting on most camera modes, the camera decides on what is “proper” exposure, and it gets it right most of the time. This goes for settings like aperture priority, shutter priority, program, and auto modes.

Under exposed shots still record most (if not all) of the detail of your shot (even though you can’t always see them) and with a little tweaking in photoshop you can bring them out. On the other hand overexposed shots tend to record less of the detail and you end up with less to work with in your post processing of images.

If you are shooting raw, the general rule is to overexpose the image to get more light (more exposure) into the shadows. The raw file typical has some decent latitude in recovering highlights. However, the same thing applies to the raw file: if the highlights are what I might say "blown-blown" there is no detail to recover.

With regards to film, particularly sheet film, over/under exposure may be determined by the contrast of the scene being photographed. Over-exposing and under-developing will boost the contrast of a flat scene whereas under-exposing and over-developing will increase the apparent contrast.
