The absorption of radiation by photographic films causes photographic fog. Fog occurs when photographic materials absorb uniform levels of energy that is part of an intended photographic exposure. Fog affects the coarsest portions of the photographic media that comprise the most light-sensitive portions of films.

Photographic Film - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

Photographic film darkens on exposure to ionizing radiation and is an indicator of the presence of radioactivity. Film is often used for determining personnel exposure and making other dose measurements for which a record of dose accumulated over a period of time is necessary, or for which a permanent record is required.

The Effect of Radiation on Selected Photographic Film We conducted this film test to evaluate several manufacturers' photographic films for their ability to acquire imagery on the International Space Station. We selected 25 motion picture, photographic slide, and negative films from three different film manufacturers.

Effects of radiation on photographic film. A study

    https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/4192726
There is no definite information at present on the fog tolerance of film. The radiation tolerance of film to gamma rays seems to fall somewhere between 1 and 50 roentgens. Although the upper limit of 50 roentgens may be possible, it appears more likely that the range will fall between 1 and 10 roentgens. (W.L.H.)

The photographic film goes darker when it absorbs radiation, just like it does when it absorbs visible light. The more radiation the film absorbs, the darker it is when it is developed. People who work with radiation wear film badges, which are checked regularly to monitor the levels of radiation absorbed.

Photographic film - Wikipedia

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_film
Photographic film is a strip or sheet of transparent film base coated on one side with a gelatin emulsion containing microscopically small light-sensitive silver ... Film optimized for detecting X-ray radiation is commonly used for medical radiography and industrial radiography by placing the subject between the film and a source of X-rays or ...

Photographic film. In the presence of radiation photographic film is able to absorb it. The more it absorbs the darker it becomes when it’s developed. People who work in environments where radiation is present wear special film badges which contain a little photographic film inside them. This is then checked on a regular basis to check how much the …

Light and Energy - How Photographic Film Works

    https://electronics.howstuffworks.com/film2.htm
It is the energy in each photon of light that causes a chemical change to the photographic detectors that are coated on the film. The process whereby electromagnetic energy causes chemical changes to matter is known as photochemistry. By carefully engineering materials, they can be chemically stable until they are exposed to radiation (light).

it generally requires at least two visble photons to produce a permanent change in a halide crystal (you need to deliver enough energy, in a short enough time, to drive the halogen away from the silver atom) but a single gamma photon will produce several secondary photons and electrons when it interacts with the emulsion, and each of these can …
