    For photographing these micromounts I use a standard Canon DSLR fitted with Kenko extension tubes with a Canon macro lens designed for the purpose but sometime Pentacon or Tokina lens mounted in reverse fashion. All this sits upon a tripod for stability as taking pictures at this level means everything has to be rock solid.

    I am currently working on obtaining a new point and shoot camera and also on a light-box. However as I have quite a few specimens that are also micromounts ranging from a few mm's to a cm. I was wondering is there any recommended tips or suggestions for photographing micromounts or even small crystals that fall in this category.

    Light Source: Micromounts must be illuminated from above, so you need a light source. Many micromounters use bright light sources with fiber optic arms that pipe the light directly to the mineral, but others use desk lamps, home made illuminators with LEDs, and so on. All you need is a bright light on the mineral.
