Most any suitable head is likely to have a 3/8-16 thread, so you may need a reducing bushing to mount it on your Trekker. Manfrotto stainless steel bushings are about as good as any, and better than most. I will leave it for someone else to recommend any new heads, as mine are older and discontinued.

With both units (notwithstanding the one defect) the ballheads work fine, appear to be made to close tolerances and with acceptable materials, etc. The controls are nicely damped as is the ball movement, but without feeling overly tight or stiff.

Which is Best: A Ball Head or a Pan Head?

Unsurprisingly, the answer to that question is this - it depends. If you usually photograph subjects that are on the move, a ball head is the way to go. If you photograph static subjects like landscapes, a pan head might be more appropriate. Either way, be sure to do your due diligence when selecting a tripod head.

It depends entirely on what you want to do with the tripod head. If you want precise, accurate movements, a geared head might be best. If you want more freedom and a free-flow feeling, a ball head may be suited. If you'd like the control of a geared head, but the freedom of of a ball head - a pan and tilt may be something to consider.

Any ball head considerations for Astrophotography?

    https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3590866
    1) It is essentially an upside down ball head with the panning base on the TOP instead of the bottom. This makes so much sense. You can level the camera and take panoramas perfectly, even without leveling the tripod, for example, which can be tedious. 2) You loosen or tighten it with a big ring that goes all the way around the monoball.
