To have a good understanding about exposure and how shutter speed, aperture and ISO affect it, we need to understand what happens within the camera when a picture is taken. As you point your camera at a subject and press the shutter button, the subject gets into your camer…

If you choose a wide open aperture, say f-4 on a 400mm telephoto, you’ll probably need to crank up your ISO setting to reach 1/1000 second shutter. On gray days you may need ISO speeds above 3200. This increases noise, but that’s better than a blurry subject. Experiment with ISO settings in your camera to understand its levels of noise.

Let’s say our camera meter tells us that the correct exposure for our scene is F5 .6 (F-stop explanation coming up shortly) at 1/2 (of a second). This means that the next (full) shutter speed higher, 1 second, lets in two times as much light as 1/2 a second. The next speed, 2 seconds, lets in twice as much light as 1 second.

Photo by David Trainer; ISO 400, f/5.0, 1/400-second exposure. Now if you look carefully you’ll see a relationship between f stops and shutter speeds. Each full f stop either halves or doubles the amount of light entering the camera and each full shutter speed stop either halves or doubles the amount of time of the exposure.

The standard settings are 24fps (or 25 fps in Europe or PAL based countries) and 30fps, with many cameras now offering 60fps and 120fps. 24fps is used to create the standard movie look, in the US, and 25fps in Europe and PAL based countries. 30fps is used more in documentary style films and can sometimes look a little too sharp for movies.

If we raise it to ISO 400 (adding 1 more unit of light) then we can keep the shutter speed at 1/60 and change the aperture to F-4. This would allow us to get more depth of field if we wanted it. Raising the ISO to 800 would allow us to shoot at F-5.6 for even more depth of field, while keeping the shutter speed at 1/60.
