RAW V’s JPEG Wedding Photography

    https://albertpalmerphotography.com/raw-vs-jpeg-wedding-photography/
A RAW file is a ‘lossless’ image that gives you all the information as the sensor sees it, typically a boring 18% grey. This means you need to add your own saturation, contrast etc. JPEGs are lossy files and they compress the data that you can’t see and applies its own algorythm to apply saturation, contrast etc.

Should I use RAW or JPEG for wedding photography?

RAW files take a lot longer to write to the card than JPEGs do (and RAW+JPEG takes longer still), so in the genres of photography where you need to take a lot of pictures quickly, a given camera will almost always perform better when shooting JPEGs. That is important to sports and wedding photographers as well as to photojournalists.

Shoot RAW vs. JPEG: Which format should you choose?

RAWs are very forgiving if you have severely underexposed or overexposed areas. “When you’re shooting in JPEG, it’s really important to nail your exposure,” Morrison points out. If you try to pull up shadows or bring down highlights on your JPEG, it could result in banding or posterization.

With JPEG images, you do not have the same flexibility as you did with the RAW files. This is because there is much less information in a JPEG file when compared to a RAW file, so you will not get the best results. Another huge disadvantage of shooting in JPEG is that it is impossible to shoot a single-shot HDR image.

What are the differences between JPEG and RAW? | Adobe

    https://www.adobe.com/creativecloud/file-types/image/comparison/jpeg-vs-raw.html
Generally, a RAW file will be between two and six times larger than a JPEG file. RAW files are bigger because they contain a much greater amount of image data. A JPEG image is essentially all that data compressed down into a smaller file size that’s easier to share.

RAW will generally give you a much better finished image than JPEG, but you will need a dedicated photo editing suite, such as Photo Shop, or one supplied by your camera manufacturer to handle the RAW extension. If you stuff it up in RAW, you can easliy reverse it, and you will suffer much less loss of quality post edit.

You most definitely should not fire your photographer because they shoot JPEG. I would use it more as a sign your photographer probably knows what they are doing and does not have to resort to adjusting the file in photo software. I was taught in college that raw is a tool, there is a time and place to use it.

Do wedding photographers shoot in RAW or JPEG? - Quora

Photography 101: Shooting RAW vs JPEG - PhotoAndTips

Having the raw file and a “thumb” file in JPEG won’t hurt you, and JPEGs have the benefit of being easy to share, virtually standard, and also lighter. Shooting both files (raw + JPEG) will drawback some space from your SD Cards, we know it. But honestly, that will teach you to be a better photographer.
