Balance in Photography

One compositional ‘rule’ (principle) that we’ve not talked much about since starting DPS is ‘balance’. While it’s a difficult thing to be specific about (it’s not like the Rule of Thirds where you can identify key spots on an image by imagining lines through it) it is a compositional factor worth considering when framing shots.

This type of balance usually follows the rule of thirds. Other ways to informally balance photos include having a small area of white against a large area of black, or black against white. This principle also works with vibrant colors against neutral colors. A small area of highly textured material can also balance out an area with little texture.

We use the rule of thirds for a few different reasons. It creates pleasing aesthetics. It creates balance when you wish to show a large portion of the background or have a lot of negative space. The key elements occupy one-third of the scene while balancing out the negative space in the remaining two-thirds of the image.

Rule of Thirds - Everything You Need to Know - NFI

    https://www.nfi.edu/rule-of-thirds/
The rule of thirds explains that if you place the main subject of your image in the top, bottom, left, or right blocks of the grid, you’ll capture a perfect picture every time. The rule gets even simpler than that. To capture a well-balanced photo, all you have to do is avoid keeping the main subject in the center box.
