Pens and Pencils for Signing Your Inkjet Prints

Glossy, satin, luster, or semi-gloss inkjet papers (photo papers) require pen as pencil will not work. Most photo papers are resin coated (photobase) material. They are coated with plastic on both sides and feel like a photo lab print. In most cases, one side is coated for printing and the other is uncoated plastic. You should not sign the back of resin coated paper. Archival pens will not dry …

I prefer the signature to look low key, which is better achieved by harder pencils IMO. with soft ones it can be hard to sign without making it rather black or if pressing lightly finding that it does not penetrate into the weave of the boad fibres. Soft pencil can also be harder to remove if you fluff it up. 2-4H would be my choice.

For most prints, I’m currently using the (01 = .25 Sakura Pigma Micron), and for book signings, I generally use the (03 = .35) or (04 = .45) because those pens produce a stronger, thicker line, and they hold up better in heavy use because they have a stronger tip.

Pencil. Go to a gallery or art museum and look at the photos; virtually all will be signed in pencil. It's the most archival writing instrument because unlike all forms of ink, pencil will never, ever fade. The graphite will literally outlast the paper itself. Also unlike many inks, pencil will not damage the paper

Art stores typically carry archival pens for signing various mediums. Some are ink and some are paint. Either way, make sure the contents of the pen are acid-free and archival quality. photo credit: zebra.paperclip I sign my prints with paint pens (archival of course). These things are easy to find at art stores, and they’re quite reliable.
