    TOHOKU-Through the Eyes of Japanese Photographers. This exhibition of photographs of Tohoku, which marks the first anniversary of the great earthquake, does not attempt to document the damage or recovery but instead uses photography to show the natural and cultural environment of Tohoku along with its people and their way of life.

    The Tohoku exhibition is curated by Kotaro Iizawa, who is recognized as the leading expert of photography critics in Japan. This exhibition is composed of the work of nine individual photographers and one photographers’ group.

    This exhibition is intended to fill that gap through the work of photographers. Tohoku has attracted many photographers since the technique of photography was introduced to Japan in the 1850s. After the 1920s, when inexpensive and easily operable cameras became available, the people of Tohoku began taking pictures of their own region.
