I’m using the 50mm Takumar prime and the bellows extended to its maximum of 150mm. Let’s see the calculation: nM = 0.15 + 150 / 50. nM = 3.15. So, I’ve got a 3.15x magnification ratio with this simple and cheap setup. Here’s how a leaf looks like from very close. And this is with the bellows extended only to 40mm.

Photography Hack: Macro Photography With Extension …

    https://karltayloreducation.com/macro-photography-extension-tubes/
Extension tubes are essentially relatively inexpensive spacers that move your lens further away from the recording medium (the sensor). In doing so, the image circle becomes bigger and therefore provides more magnification. Because of this shift, the lens is then able to be focused on very close objects. However, using extension tubes means the ...

Extension Tube Set. By physically extending the distance between the camera and a lens, you allow the camera to focus closer than its published minimum focus distance (MFD), allowing close-up photography. This allows you to use your “regular” lenses for close-up photography—no specialized or expensive macro lenses are needed!

Bellows and extension tubes serve the same purpose, that is to add extension between the lens and the camera. The obvious difference: Bellows are more expensive, extension tubes are cheaper. B&H has a 900$ novoflex bellows for canon, where as a set of 3 extension tubes will cost you about 180$ (or 80-120$ for canon-brand extension tubes).

The 120mm Macro Planar will get you to almost half life size without using an extension tube. Using a macro lens minimizes any compromises in image quality and special techniques.
