What is Coma in Photography and How You Can Reduce It

    https://photographylife.com/what-is-coma
Coma, also known as “comatic aberration”, is a type of optical aberration that results in off-axis points of light appearing comet-shaped. As light rays from the edges of the frame pass through various parts of a spherical surface, they vary in magnification, creating a series of asymmetrical circular shapes of increasing sizes.

What we are talking about here is the photographic definition of coma which is: a spherical lens aberration in which the image of a point of light is rendered as a comet-shaped blur. A lens aberration, of course, is any imperfection in the way the lens focuses light. (There are a number of lens aberrations but this article is mainly limited to coma).

What is coma? – Tom Bol Photography, LLC

Coma is an aberration of the lens or design which renders point sources of light as saucers. Take any of your star images and zoom into close at 100 percent and more. If your stars are circular, you have minimal coma and a terrific lens for astral photography.

Coma is a relatively common problem on telescopes, microscopes and photographic lenses, and it is often most visible at wide lens apertures. Unlike chromatic aberration, coma damages an image permanently, and it cannot be fixed via post-processing software. It is therefore important to pick lenses that have been properly designed to exhibit …

coma. Definition: Aberration usually seen when point of light far from centre of the image is projected as a comet-shaped blur of light, usually with the head of the 'comet' pointing away from the centre of the image. * Oblique rays from an off-axis object produce an asymmetric patch of light resulting from increase in magnification in the direction away from the optical axis …

What is coma in astrophotography? - Sony Photo Review

    https://sonyphotoreview.com/what-is-coma-astrophotography/
What is coma? Without getting to deep into the science, coma is an optical aberration that results in some points of light growing “tails”, especially near the edges of images. This is very noticeable in some images, where stars will be perfectly circular in the center of the frame, yet appear as “comet shaped” near the corners.

How to Remove Coma Aberration From Your Astro Images

Coma or comatic aberrations are like spherical aberrations. The difference lies in the shape of the distortion. Rather than round, the distortion is elongated, like the shape of a comet. This occurs when light entering at the edge of a lens comes in at an angle. Coma is …
