D-max Definition: Maximum density: (1) Measure of greatest or maximum density of silver or dye image attained by film or print in given sample. (2) Point at top of characteristic curve of negative film or bottom of curve for positive -- i.e. region of high exposure -- at which density reaches maximum for given film, development time and developer: just before curve levels off or begins …

Minimum and maximum density. A term used less frequently today than in the days of film, although Dmax is often listed within the specifications of scanners to show the optical density of the darkest shadows which may be recorded. A scanner’s dynamic range is calculated by subtracting Dmin – the brightest highlights capable of being recorded – from …

DMax is the maximum density that a) occurs in a film or print, or b) that can be distinguished from black by a scanner or densitometer or whatever device. It is a single number representing a single density. Transmission and reflected DMaxs/Dmins (for film, say, vs. a print) are calculated differently from each other, so are not directly comparable.

What is dynamic range in photography? - Adobe

    https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/video/discover/dynamic-range.html
Dynamic range is the measurement between the maximum and minimum values that can be perceived in an image or video – from the lowest values of density to the highest of luminance. The greater the contrast between the deepest blacks and the brightest whites, the larger the dynamic range. In photography and video, the term is generally used to talk about the …

Dmax and Dmin are portmanteaus for Density + Maximum or Density + Minimum, and relate to the optical density a medium is able to record. In terms of digital, the Dmax value is commonly given for scanners and relates to the darkest portion of a print or film from which the scanner can still retrieve detail, and the higher the number, the better.

does dmax really matter in prints? | Photrio.com …

The Dmax is not very useful measure of the deepness of the black, unless you are making the print all black. Instead, the shape of the shoulder is important. Paper with a rather abrupt transition from straight line to Dmax tends to give most crisp shadow. One reason for this is obvious, because of increased shadow contrast.

Using K3 inks, d-max values are typically above 2. For example, I measured d-max = 2.3 with Moab Kokopelli Semi-Gloss in color mode and d-max = 2.45 in Advanced B&W mode, again for a 3800. Keep in mind that d-max is only one technical measurement and that there are many other factors that determine the aesthetic quality of a print on paper.
