THe rule of thumb is that the lowest shutter speed for handheld photography is the inverse of the lens’ focal length. So, for a 50mm lens, the minimum speed would be 1/50 s. IMHO, this depends a lot on the photographer and the subject. I can shoot very well handheld at about 1/30 s if I’m shooting a stationary subject.

So what is the slowest shutter speed you can use when hand-holding the camera? In my professional experience, it lives anywhere between 1/80 and 1/ 50 of a second. I can quite confidently shoot at 1/80 of a second and see no blur.

A good rule of thumb is to never shoot slower than your focal length. For example, if you're shooting at 24mm don't go below 1/30 (1/20 being too slow). If you're on a 200mm, try not to shoot below 1/250. This is of course a general statement and does not take into account skill, balance, weight of camera, hand positioning or caffeine intake ;)

A Note on Handheld Shooting. 1/60s is usually the minimum shutter speed you’ll want to use when shooting a fixed subject handheld with a lens that has a focal length of 50mm or less to avoid blurry shots from camera shake. Your mileage may vary though and you might find that you get better results with higher shutter speeds.

Re: What is your minimum shutter speed that gives you sharp handheld photos? In reply to Davidgilmour • Apr 20, 2012 An old rule of thumb states that the minimum shutter speed for a given lens (non stabilised) is equal to the lens real focal length, so for the x100 it will be about 1/23, for a 100mm lens it will be 1/100 and so on.
