The project spanned four decades, consisted of 40 volumes of image and text, and produced over 40,000 photographs. In undertaking this colossal task, Curtis sought to record the culture and lifestyle of Native American tribes before it was ‘lost forever.’

    They became friends and this led to Curtis being appointed as the official photographer for the 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedition. During this expedition, Curtis photographed Inuit settlements and soon followed Grinnell to visit the Piegan Blackfoot Tribe in Montana in 1900.

    In 1900, Grinnell took Curtis to the Sun Dance ceremony of the Blackfeet tribe in Montana and instructed him in the systematic methods required for gathering scientifically valid information. Only weeks after his experiences with Grinnell, Curtis initiated his own expedition to photograph Indians in the southwest.

    Having become well-known for his work with the Indians, Curtis participated in the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska as the lead photographer. He then accompanied George Bird Grinell, editor of Forest and Stream, on a trip to northern Montana. There they witnessed the deeply sacred Sundance of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes.

    In 1900 he observed the Sun Dance of the Blood, Blackfoot and Algonquin tribes in Montana. He stayed with them that whole summer, experiencing their ceremonial traditions. That same year he visited on the Hopi reservation in Arizona. He journeyed to and lived with many other tribes during his years of work.

    By 1895, Curtis began photographing Native Americans. He took many pictures of the Alaskan/Yukon Gold Rush of 1897 and was the official expedition photographer on E.H. Harriman’s Alaskan expedition of 1899. It was on this very expedition that Curtis discovered his passion for documenting Native peoples’ ways of life.
