    Porter’s early photographs of birds were in black and white, but in the early 1940s he began using the then-new Kodachrome colour film, whose slow speed required the use of large flashbulbs in order to achieve correct exposures. Porter worked with a cumbersome large-format camera, valuing the greater detail this equipment allowed.

    Eliot Porter with his Linhof Technika. In 1930, Eliot Porter purchased a 35mm Leica camera. The landscape photographs by Ansel Adams strongly influenced him. Adams encouraged Porter to use a large-format camera. After meeting Alfred Stieglitz, he acquired a bigger camera. Stieglitz exhibited his prints at An American Place gallery in 1939.

Born in 1901, his mother and father – a social campaigner and a biologist – fostered his evident appreciation for the environment.
