    This was how the south portal of the disused Whitrope tunnel appeared in August 1990. The tunnel, about ten miles south of Hawick, proved to be the greatest engineering challenge to construction of the Border Union Railway in the early 1860s. While it was being built, more than 400 gallons of water were estimated to be pouring into the bore every minute. …

Built in the 1860s and closed along with the line in 1969, the 1,200 yard tunnel is currently sealed for safety reasons following a partial collapse.     This created the steep dipping strata seen in the tunnel with the first contact of the group 74 metres from north portal and last noted at 110 metres.     Whitrope Tunnel [NAT] OS 1:10,000 map, 1985. This tunnel formerly carried the Edinburgh-Carlisle major line of the North British Rly (the 'Waverley Route') beneath Sandy Edge. The summit of the line is adjacent to the S entrance to the tunnel. The tunnel crosses the boundary between the parishes of Cavers (to the N) and Castleton (to the S).

    Whitrope Tunnel, Scottish Borders. Looking north from the south end, a faint speck of light can be seen from the far end over 1000m away. Curved at each end, the rest of the tunnel is straight. The remains of down pipes can be seen on the the arch. Since the tunnel was built, over 400 gallons of water pours in each minute.

    I took this photo on the closed Waverley Route on 1st April 1970. It shows an Engineer's Special poking out of Whitrope Tunnel. A few minutes before this I'd been on the footbridge at Stobs taking a photo of this loco and carriage approaching and had an exchange with a gentleman walking his dog on the track further up the line towards Shankend.
