    The earliest known surviving photograph was taken by Joseph Niépce (1765–1833), in 1827 using a camera obscura; it shows the view from the window of his home. Rediscovered by Helmut Gernsheim in 1952, it is now in the Gernsheim Collection at the University of Texas, Austin, USA. All records listed on our website are current and up-to-date.
