Because too many kids have jumped onto the HDR bandwagon and produce the garish, cartoonish looking travesties with horrid halos all over the scene and think it is some kind of good photography. I don't think you will find many, or any, photographers who dislike GOOD HDR that is used as the technique was intended, .... to simply and subtlety get some more dynamic …

Ansel Adams for instance was a pro at HDR (the zone system he used in his dark room processing was basically meant to achieve just that), and nobody would dare blast his works. However, when not done properly HDR and specially tone-mapped photos quickly becomes hideous. They're the photos with over saturated colours, halos, lack of shadows, etc.

TL;DR: HDR is a technique-trend, and when poorly applied, it can create very ugly photos. While some professional photographers will deliver HDR photos to clients who want it, others are more eager to continue doing what they know produces quality images that will stand the test of time.

why do some photographers have such distain for HDR photos? thanks This has been discussed dozens of times. It's not a dislike of the technique, it's a dislike of how it's so grossly overdone to the point it no longer looks realistic - garish colors, halos around subjects, lack of contrast, etc. Mark Forum Parent First Previous Next Flat view Forum

Some photographers continue to use HDR to great effect; While others continue to (according to some) heavily overuse it. Still others roundly criticize any and all who use HDR as individuals who are responsible for the systematic destruction of photography as an art form. The major issues with HDR images start where dark meets light.

Knowing My Limits – Why I Don’t Do HDR

Because there is so much more to learn and improve in the realm of photography that HDR need not even apply. It bugs me that, when I look at the full gallery of someone with an HDR shot, on Flickr for instance, people getting into it still don’t have the fundamental basics down to the point where they can produce solid photos time and time again.

Why do some people hate HDR? Some might call the above Old Courthouse example too obvious. Photography purists tend to dislike how distracting the post-production is, or consider it amateurish work. In theory, though, HDR is great.

HDR Is Ruining Your Photos - Gizmodo

To HDR or Not – When and If You Should Use HDR?

#4 – Do not do HDR to “fix” an image or to make it better You cannot take a bad image and make it into a good one by using any processing technique, HDR included. An image with poor lighting, bad composition and lack of a good subject to draw the viewer’s eye will still have all those problems after applying HDR! Unedited RAW image.
